Ask HN: What's the current state of remote work/telecommuting?

  • Still an upward trend of medium strength.

I do know more people working remotely now than ever.

And I see more employers and clients voluntarily stating that remote is OK for new positions.

Then again, I still know some people that would prefer to go to an office to keep the separation of work and home.

I think remote works great for the majority of development jobs. You get a larger talent pool regardless of location, you can pay less for office space, the developers tend to be more self-managing, and everyone is forced to communicate openly in public forums (Slack, project tools, etc).

  • The majority of the remote jobs are in the US and for US citizens only. For 3 reasons: 1) contracts 2) time zone 3) English. However, some US companies accepts Canadians, some companies accepts candidates from the whole American continent, and finally some companies accept candidates from everywhere.

Outside of the US, remote jobs don't seem existing. I don't know a single company in my country (France) who allows remote workers officially. I don't see remote jobs get democratized here before at least 10 years. Most companies here just start to use SCRUM and agile methods. I talked with some CTO and managers from small and middle companies and they just don't think that remote jobs work. It was almost impossible to discuss about it.
