My local McDonalds has 2 of these. I never see anyone using them since they were put at a very inconvenient place. Also, they made them very intimidating in size, they are very big. And, the ordering is very public. For whatever reason, I hate that people can see what I'm ordering. I'd say they are a failure, for now, but only because you can go to a cashier and order, no need to use them.
I think they need to convert them so they look and function more like an ATM. People are used to using ATMs and they would be more comfortable with them.
The real killer is the McDonalds app. Once they emphasize the preorder/order feature that will kill the need for most order takers. It's only a matter of time.
