n=116 adults, trial was over a 12-week period. Time restricted eating group was doing 16:8 intermittent fasting (eating only between noon and 8PM, aka skipping breakfast).
Results:
> In this prospective randomized clinical trial that included 116 adults with overweight or obesity, time-restricted eating was associated with a modest decrease (1.17%) in weight that was not significantly different from the decrease in the control group (0.75%).
Both groups lost weight. Time restricted eating group lost a tiny bit more, but it's statistically insignificant.
The time restricted eating group was told to eat ad libitum, or as much as they wanted, within the time window. The control group was told to eat "3 structured meals per day", which isn't exactly a neutral control group. It's too bad they didn't just grab random people, let them eat as they normally did, and track their weight. This might explain why both groups managed to lose some weight over the course of the study.
> Time-restricted eating, in the absence of other interventions, is not more effective in weight loss than eating throughout the day.
That's not really the claim of 16:8, though. The theory is that it makes it easier to maintain a lower calorie diet, as it changes how many feel hunger. I think most people doing intermittent fasting knows it's still calories in vs burned that's the key. Still, I guess it's nice to confirm?
