Five Eyes governments, India, and Japan make new call for encryption backdoors

  • India is notorious for enforcing blanket bans on internet services especially in Kashmir. Also they are cracking down on online dissent with people being arrested for social media posts under Anti Terrorism Laws.

  • Aside from current lacking leadership, foresight and strategy in politics to identify issues in dire need of solutions, this almost sounds like a cry for help. They are correct that large companies do actually pose the most threat to reliable encryption so they are at least correct in finding the most likely collaborator.

The answer should be 'no' of course. While privacy is constitutionally guaranteed and subsequently ignored by the 'five eyes' for inconvenience, some people really do like it for good reason.

You actually want to get to people trafficking humans? Their largest threat is whistleblowers. How is that relationship between those and the 'five eyes' doing?

That would make sure constitutional rights aren't violated and would solve crime. The most recent and prominent case is still the connection to the political class and what I suspect to be the primary brothel that allegedly had some minors involved. Other allege that fear of racism accusations blocked investigations.

I don't know of any case where mass surveillance actually helped. Whistleblowers are actually prosecuted right at this moment, so this call is hard to endure.

  • Could they have chosen worse branding than calling themselves 'Five Eyes' ???

  • Not sure which party is worse, the government or Facebook?
