Most five year olds are just learning to read, so it's helpful to have visual cues like pictures or colorful areas on the screen so you can instruct them to, say, 'make a selection from the blue area' or 'click on the part next to the circles'.

After a quick look at your app, I think it could use more visual cues which are appropriate for your users.

My 3 and 5 year old kids have no issue using an iPad.
