Given Porsche's large stake in Rimac, and Porsche also being one of the larger stakeholders in Bugatti this point (which makes sense, given it was a Piech pet project) this makes a lot of sense.
Rimac + Porsche heading VW Group's leading edge of EV power train development will keep things mighty interesting.
It's still primarily a vehicle in which to help offset some of the crazy R&D costs of letting engineers go nuts with battery, EV power train, and materials/composites development. Some of it will feed back into motorsports (and vice versa), and VW gets to keep an old prestige brand around.
