Virtual aperture synthetic focus was my obsession for a while... a series of photos are taken from slightly different positions of the same still subject. The images are then aligned using hugin into a virtual focal plane, then averaged into one output frame.
The net effect is that of a virtual lens the size of the grouping of photos. I had a lot of fun with it, but rage-quit the flickr account that had my best examples half a decade ago. 8(
