I always find it ironic that we started with "E pluribus unum" ("Out of many, one") a uniting statement and added "In God We Trust" a dividing one.
Same goes for the Pledge of Allegiance "Under God" added just before "indivisible".
Both being formalized in the 1950's.
Actially at the beginning was 'In Gold We Trust' but a letter got lost in the process.
