We need to reach the same high level of developer experience with Open Source as what cloud providers provide today. It is infinitely easier to prototype and move fast using the building blocks provided by the cloud, and hard to let these go when things move into production.
Things will be different if proprietary becomes objectively more painful from the get-go, and/or when Open Source becomes easier to adopt. We can only work on the latter, though.
