I'm alarmed at how often I'm hearing this sentiment from apparently smart people, i.e. "...but this is a democracy". I have been hearing it enough lately that it's starting to look like people think the word "democracy" refers to a kind of enlightened state with some sort of guarantees of fairness or justice.
Democracy literally means majority rule, that's all. Why would anyone expect that to result in fairness?
If you want guarantees of fairness and justice then you need something else as well (like a set of guaranteed baseline rights, an independent judicial body to uphold them etc.)
