This reminded me of a similar plot line in a sci-fi style tv episode, and sent me on a massive 'tip of my tongue' hunt, it turned out to be 'The Dead Zone' episode 11 'Shaman', but is only suggested as being 'hundreds' of years in the past.
From what I can see via my searches though, this isn't a particularly new theory, and it has been suggested to have happened ~12k5 to 13k before present for a couple of decades at least.
