Ask HN: Is there an open source (maybe torrent-based) alternative to YouTube?

  • It's not really a monopoly with Vimeo, PeerTube, Twitch, TikTok, and more around... they have just built a superior product for most people.

Something like what you want will never supplant YT because people want to make money producing content. We get better content because people can spend more time/money to produce it. If you are blocking ads, are you supporting the creators some other way?

    > Maybe then even allowing a bit of pirating!? Treating sharing video media as a common good not something anyone should be able to monopolize.

This is an amusing take, considering how many people want to forbid the AI companies from training on the same content.
