Take the Pedals Off the Bike

  • Having read this it makes sense to me. When you teach someone to ride a motorcycle you don't teach them to just let the clutch out and twist the throttle and take off and go. It literally starts out by straddling the bike and walking it forward. Then progressing with the next step of slowly letting the clutch out partially so the engine pulls the bike forward as you walk it forward as well. And you progress from there to get comfortable with that motion.

Be it a bicycle or a motorcycle the gyroscopic forces of the bike want to keep it upright and going in a straight line. It's just learning to trust that process and when you just stick someone on and push them really fast they don't trust that process.

  • The variation I've read is to lower the seat as far as it can go so that one's feet touch the ground and to have the learner coast down a gentle slope.
