Ask HN: What would you do with a year off?

  • I’ve taken three years off. I’ve spent the majority of my time trying to improve my health and looks while living in a new city. All in the pursuit of finding a partner.

It has not been successful but a lot of people say that I need to do a few more surgeries and bulking and cutting cycles. Is what it is - dating is extremely superficial and only gets more so as time goes on.

  • I'd do nothing for a while. Get some decent sleep for a change. Stop being in the race. Enjoy some peace and quiet.

  • Participated in beta testing for a few computer games. Did some localized translation for these games. Looked for work.

  • Code on something I really want to. Probably a game, whilst noodling with the ideas I have for agi.

  • Live in europe or some city better than mine, code leisurely, read more (hah, such lies).

  • 1. Train to become a competitive ultra marathoner.

    2. Research and write about what I call the first person problem. The more experienced I become in my software career the more it appears this is the greatest single limiting factor in software employment. It’s the inclination of thinking only in terms of one’s self, like narcissism. It’s so much more ubiquitous and prevalent than just a personality deficit of a few participants, particularly compared to most other segments of employment.

  • Same thing I just did :)
